This bowl is typical of the Portneuf style of ceramics. The style was produced by several Scottish companies between 1840 and 1920. Primarily intended for export, the Portneuf style gained popularity in Québec due to its bright colors and common motifs of flowers, animals, and rosettes. Because many of these typic pieces have been found in the Québec town of Portneuf, early collectors mistakenly concluded that the style originated there. Although its true provenance is known today, the term “Portneuf” is still used.
